Winter Wonderland

(Debbie Hennessey)
September 9, 2009
Felix Bernard & Richard B. Smith

For years I’ve been asked to record some Christmas songs and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I believe that we are strongly influenced by the style of songs we grew up with as well as the songs themselves. I think this is especially true when it comes to holiday songs. For me, it was Christmas songs by singers like Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, Elvis, The Carpenters, Burl Ives, etc. As December in Connecticut arrived, my brothers and I would watch the holiday TV specials and listen to the albums or radio. We just knew it was almost Christmas and that Santa was on his way when we heard these great songs. I wanted to honor that time and place with a classic pop version of Winter Wonderland, full of lush strings and happy jingle bells. Felix Bernard and Dick Smith originally wrote Winter Wonderland in 1934, and although it never mentions Christmas, the song evokes such strong images of winter and joy that it has become one of the most recorded holiday songs of all time. This version of the song was produced and arranged by Dan Marfisi of Jones House Music and mastered by multi-Grammy Award Winner Gavin Lurssen of Lurssen Mastering. Artwork and design is by Orlando Rios. My thanks to all for lending me their wonderful talent. I hope this song will bring back fond memories of the holidays to all of you. Debbie

Winter Wonderland - Dick Smith, Felix Bernard 1934

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,

in the lane, snow is glistening

A beautiful sight,

we're happy tonight,

walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,

here to stay is a new bird

He sings a love song,

as we go along,

walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,

Then pretend that he is Parson Brown

He'll say: Are you married?

we'll say: No man,

But you can do the job

when you're in town.

Later on, we'll conspire,

as we dream by the fire

To face unafraid,

the plans that we've made,

walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,

and pretend that he's a circus clown

We'll have lots of fun with mister snowman,

until the other kiddies knock him down.

When it snows, ain't it thrilling,

Though your nose gets a chilling

We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,

walking in a winter wonderland.

Walking in a winter wonderland,

walking in a winter wonderland.
